Heisig's First 1500 Traditional Hanzi

Posted by Charlie @ Discovering Mandarin Friday, 16 October 2009
Firstly, my Heisig book came today. Excited!!!! (due to being busy I start learning tomorrow.)

The main reason for this post is that I have been asked by several people recently, to include Heisig's suggested 1500 Traditional characters as I had eluded to them in a previous post.

Heisig proposes a method of learning where you only learn the meaning of the character and a way to remember how to write it through a story of its primitives and their meanings. Not the pronounciation in tones or the pinyin.

I include links to buy both the traditional characters (listed below) and the simplifed characters I talked about last week.

I apologise for not organising them as neatly as the last post. But I hope those that had asked for them, will be happy.

  2. Blimey!

Where did you get them from? Does the book come with electronic files? Or is there a website?

  3. Actually neither specifically. Though, I did get them from another site, it was rather hidden away.

You can get this info (and much much more) from the ANKI decks though if you export them as a text file (I am rather presuming that there is a traditional hanzi deck)

I found them a while back when I was looking for the simplified, and embarressingly it took me a long while to realise they weren't the simplified ones.

    Oooops.

    :D

  5. As a native speaker, I think listening & speaking are more important than writing & reading.

I don't know... You may find it easier to write or read Chinese when you're already 90% good at listening and speaking.

Writing in Chinese is the most daunting part!
    He he... :-)

  7. Writing Chinese is a good way to learn Chinese philosophy though, especially traditional one. Speaking is useful in daily communication.

  8. I have to say although I am planning on spending a fair amount of time learning to read the characters I am still practising and devoloping my speaking.

I hope to combine the two but I really want a good root in the reading as well as speaking.

I want to put a stop to the characters all looking so foriegn to me.

  10. Hi Charlie!

I downloaded the XLS file for the Simplified Hanzi you linked in your other post. I tried to match the simplified list with the list of traditional you posted here but they do not match. The traditional Hanzi are more (1521) than the simplified.

    What cause the difference?
Here is the XSL file, if you would like to check it:

  11. Gilberto,

thanks for your comment. The traditional and simplified characters are different. And Heisig's list for simplified and traditional hanzi are not the same.

The traditional hanzi don't have more than 1500 but there will be some different keywords for characters as they frequency and radicals used are presumably quite different.

I hope that makes some sense?

  13. Hi!

I finished Heisig's RSH last week.

I also bought Remembering Traditional Hanzi and compiled an Excel spreadsheet comparing traditional vs simplified.

If you would like to take a look you may download the zipped file here:

    http://3.ly/DgJ

Traditional characters different from the simplified form are highlighted. The file also contains a ANKI database with the about 500 traditional characters different from the simplified form.

Hope it may be useful to someone. Please let me know if you have any suggestion.

    Greetings from Italy,

    Gilberto
